Tempranillo Day 2024

November 14 All day

Celebrating Tempranillo Day: A Tribute to Spain’s Iconic Grape—and Texas’ Rising Star

Tempranillo Day is a fantastic time for wine lovers to celebrate the bold flavors and heritage of this classic Spanish grape. Known for its versatility, Tempranillo is widely revered in its home country of Spain, where it forms the backbone of Rioja and Ribera del Duero wines. This annual celebration, championed by TAPAS (Tempranillo Advocates, Producers, and Amigos Society), can be marked on November 9th or on International Tempranillo Day, observed on the second Thursday in November. This year that would be the 14th. For more on these dates, Wine Folly offers insights on the history and spread of Tempranillo worldwide, including here in the United States at Wine Folly or read her two minutes summary.

Tempranillo: From Spain to Texas

Tempranillo is celebrated for its deep red fruit flavors, earthiness, and hints of tobacco and spice. Wine Folly describes it as a “medium- to full-bodied wine with rich, ruby color and balanced tannins,” a profile that makes it well-suited for various cuisines and occasions. While its roots are in Spain, Tempranillo has also thrived in Texas, where it’s crafted into wines that bring a unique perspective to this heritage grape. Texas’ sunny climate and high-elevation vineyards in the Texas High Plains allow the grape to develop its signature richness and complexity.

Texas Tempranillo has been gaining recognition, showcasing that this classic grape can thrive outside of Spain’s borders. One standout example is the 2019 Bingham Family Vineyards Tempranillo, which highlights the rich potential of Texas terroir. Known for our dedication to sustainable farming and high-quality winemaking, Bingham Family Vineyards captures the essence of Tempranillo, giving it a Texas twist.

We are also well know for our Tempranillo red wine blend call Dirt Farmer. Our 2019 Dirt Farmer has been a top favorite with our customers.

Whether you celebrate on November 9th or the second Thursday in November, there are many ways to enjoy Tempranillo:

  1. Host a Tempranillo Tasting: Compare Tempranillos from different regions—Spain, Texas, and California—to experience how terroir influences the grape’s profile. The 2019 Bingham Family Vineyards Tempranillo is an ideal addition, bringing a bold Texan interpretation to the lineup.
  2. Prepare a Spanish-Inspired Feast: Tempranillo is a natural match for Spanish cuisine, including tapas like chorizo, jamón, and Manchego cheese. Make it a night to honor Tempranillo’s origins with these classic dishes.
  3. Pair with Texas-Style BBQ: For a Texan twist, pair Bingham’s Tempranillo with smoky BBQ or grilled meats. The wine’s boldness and structure hold up well to rich flavors.
